We are very excited to share with you a collaboration between CMC and Habitat for Humanity to help more students earn their CMC degrees.
This semester Habitat for Humanity is employing six CMC students who work from one to three days a week, scheduled around their classes. For these students, having a job while going to school at the same time is a necessity. They are working in Habitat’s ReStores to earn money to cover their school expenses (tuition, books, and transportation) and living expenses (clothes, food, etc.). In some cases, they are even helping support their families. All of these students worked this past summer and plan to work during school breaks this year as well. Several others, who worked for Habitat while studying at CMC, have graduated from CMC and are now working full-time in the Roaring Fork Valley for other local organizations/ companies.
Habitat is a strong proponent of the “hand-up, not a hand-out” philosophy of helping people. Having students work to earn their school money is a great way to embed the values of working for what they need and want, not expecting anyone else to support them. While juggling the responsibilities of both school and work while earning money, the students are also learning important workplace skills. They serve customers in the ReStores and help stage merchandise. Habitat will also provide “financial literacy” training for our student employees, teaching them about managing their finances in general.
We invite you to make a donation to our Work Study Program so that Habitat can enlist more students. While Habitat has been paying 100% to date for student work/study employees, over $75,000 over the past year, going forward, Habitat will pay the first two-thirds of the student’s wages and the funds raised from supporters like you will pay the remaining third. There are two easy ways to contribute--either to the CMC Foundation earmarked for this collaboration or directly to Habitat for Humanity Roaring Fork Valley. To get things started, Jim and Connie Calaway have generously pledged $10,000 for this year. Please join them as we strive to help more young people help themselves.
