Gurule & May Families

About This Campaign

Please Welcome Habitat for Humanity’s Newest Silt Partner Families

Meet Lisa Gurule and her sons Noah, 18 and Quinton, 9.

Lisa works at the Garfield County Clerk and Recorder Office in Rifle. She began this essential career path after years of struggling with underemployment. She worked hard to earn her GED, which allowed her to advance to her current position. In 2012, Lisa and her family moved to Silt and she is excited to finally be able to purchase a home in the community she loves.

Lisa is the proud parent of five children and four grandchildren. Her youngest son Quinton is a student at the Two Rivers Community School and Noah will be attending the prestigious Colorado School of Mines this fall, where he will be studying Petroleum Engineering with the goal of an overseas career.

A Habitat for Humanity home will provide long term stability for the Gurule family, a place they can gather together for years to come.

Meet Renae & Joshua May and their daughters Erin, 10 and KayLynn 7.

This local hard-working couple meet at and graduated from Rifle High School. With two young daughters, this family was hit especially hard by the economic downturn. They felt like they were on the right track; purchasing an older mobile home, steady jobs, and systematically saving. With the building economy gone, their savings was quickly wiped out, they were forced to declare bankruptcy in 2012. This tough lesson has helped this family become even stronger and focus on their families true needs not wants.

Everyday at work, at the front desk of the Garfield County Housing Authority, Renae sees the enormous need for affordable housing in our communities. When being interviewed this couple explained, “we know there are families that are struggling more than our family, and we are ok to be renters forever; but receiving a hand-up, not a hand-out through Habitat will allow us to achieve our dream of homeownership.”

Habitat for Humanity of the Roaring Fork Valley

Campaign to Support Habitat for Humanity of the Roaring Fork Valley

The Habitat for Humanity of the Roaring Fork Valley provides an option for low income families who otherwise would not be able to afford a simple decent home of their own, using conventional or low interest loans. Homes are sold with an affordable mortgage; monthly payments based on 29% of the household income are paid to Habitat. Monthly mortgage payments go into a revolving "Fund for Humanity" that is used to build more houses.

Additional funding comes from tax-deductible donations of money and materials. Volunteers provide much of the construction labor, working alongside partner families. Habitat for Humanity is a hand-up not a hand-out. Partner families invest 250 hours of their own labor - sweat equity - into building their home and the homes of others alongside of volunteers and the Habitat construction team.

As a result, the following program outcomes are produced: • Habitat brings the community of need together with the contributors, supporters, pre-qualified homeowners, and volunteers to build a better community by eliminating poverty housing. • Habitat provides families with a stable and growing base of financial security.• Habitat provides a permanent and lasting solution to a family's housing crisis.  • Habitat for Humanity is a movement of people who build more than houses. By bringing homeowners together with volunteers, donors, community leaders, foundations, churches, and hundreds of other supporters, Habitat builds stable families, safe neighborhoods, and caring communities.• Habitat helps to break the cycle of poverty by giving families the opportunity to become self-sufficient through home-ownership.
